CHAPTER 8

T ess left the café and walked toward the school. A brisk wind picked up dust and blew through the town. Chuck had told her it was a common occurrence, and she’d have to get used to it. But today, there were dark clouds on the horizon. She hoped that she and Rose would get to the mansion before the storm hit. Tess was almost to the school when she saw Sawyer pull up in the rig.

She called out to him. “Think we’ll get home before the storm?”

He shrugged. “Who knows. Sometimes the clouds tease us and just blow wind and other times dump a flood of rain.”

Tess climbed in and sat in the back. Jacob had been such a blessing to her, Joe, and Bart. She closed her eyes and dreamed. If only she could be the kind of woman that would be good for Jacob. Yet, she knew that she and Joe had accounts to settle.

They pulled up to the school, and Rose came running. “Tess, I’m so glad you’re in the carriage.”

Tess hugged the girl. “Did you have a good day in school?”

“Yes.” She grinned. “Jimmy likes me. He said so. Do you think I can marry him?”

“I think you both have a lot of growing up to do before you need to worry about that.” Tess smoothed the girl’s hair. She’d have to show Jacob how to fix Rose’s hair. Then again, the girl had been hard at play at school.

Rose sighed. “I suppose you’re right, but at least I can pretend.” Rose stared at her. “You’re not married yet.”

“No.”

“Hmm. Maybe you can find someone here.” Her little face beamed. “Daddy needs a wife. My Mama died when I was a baby.” She sat back and stared at Tess.

Tess could see the little girl’s mind spinning with matchmaking ideas. To divert Rose’s thoughts, Tess smiled. “If it doesn’t rain, we can go to the stables and see the horses.”

That did the trick. Rose grinned and held Tess’s hand. “I’d love that. Pony Bill misses me now that I have to go to school. Do you think Joe will be home today?”

“I’m not sure. He said it might be a couple days before he gets back.”

“Oh.” She frowned. “I like Joe. He might be my husband.”

Tess laughed. “You think he’s better than Jimmy?”

“He’s older.”

“That’s true.” Tess grinned thinking about Joe and how he was going to have to deal with Rose. Already, she had him wrapped around her little finger.

“I wonder when Mr. Wright will have my big horse ready. I can’t wait.”

Tess smiled at the girl. “That will be exciting, but for now, you ride Pony Bill so well.”

Rose put her hands under her chin. “I do love Pony Bill.”

“You’ll have to make sure you ride him, pet him, and brush him.”

The girl nodded. “And give him treats. He loves carrots and apples.”

Sawyer turned into the long drive to the mansion.

“I’m glad you’re here with us, Miss Tess.” Rose hugged her hand to her face.

“You have a beautiful house.
